When talking photography with my couples, one of the questions that always comes up is about the Engagement Session. All wedding photographers offer engagement sessions, and I often hear couples second-guessing whether they really need those pictures for that money. I’m here to tell you, Yes. You do.
There are so many reasons why engagement pictures are a smart idea. Because I’m a romantic, I’ll start with my favorite. So…
Reason #1: Because being engaged is romantic!! It’s a sweet and tender time in the life of a marriage that will never be again. When you have these pictures to look back on, it’s a different feeling than looking at your wedding pictures. Engagement shots will evoke in you that sense of anticipation, that sense of hope and excitement and longing, when everything was yet to unfold. Like the first hint of warmth in the early Spring air that makes you turn your face to the sun and say, “Thank you for this beautiful season to come!”
Reason #2: Because time spent with your wedding photographer before your wedding is invaluable. It’s a chance to let down the barriers and get to know one another as people, outside of a structured setting. It’s a time to become comfortable in front of a camera and to learn to take direction, or to forget it’s there and just be yourself. An engagement session is also an opportunity for your photographer to become familiar with your faces, your angles, your nuances, how you move and how to best capture your beauty.
Reason #3: It’s really fun!! As opposed to the natural parameters of a wedding day, your engagement session will be full of freedom and laughter, playfulness and honest moments. Together with your photographer, get some great locations lined up and make it an occasion! Buy a new dress, have your hair and makeup done, get a bottle of champagne (or beer!) and feel like the VIP that you are!
Reason #4: You’ll be glad you did. It’s that simple.
